Amid recent allegations against Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder and a request to remove him as owner, it was disclosed that the football team paid a settlement of $1.6M to a female employee who in April 2009 accused Snyder of sexual harassment and assault, including that Snyder asked the employee for sex, groped her, and attempted to remove her clothes. Fast forward to 2021, when the NFL issued a $10M fine after declaring the team’s work culture “both generally and particularly for women, was highly unprofessional.” Dozens of employees have complained about sexual and workplace harassment by Snyder.

What would a respectful workplace have done?

No employee – or business owner – is exempt from anti-harassment laws in the workplace. The tone of an organization is set at the top, and leaders must demonstrate respectful behavior to help prevent a toxic work environment. The leaders of respectful workplaces serve as role models for appropriate behavior, and do not tolerate – or engage in – harassment or other misconduct.
